What Is Hair Grafting?

Hair loss can cause psychological stress and a loss of self-esteem. If you are unhappy with your appearance because of baldness, hair grafting should be considered.
  1. Hair Loss

    • Hair follicles have three stages. It grows a hair, then it sheds a hair. Finally, the follicle goes dormant for a short period before beginning the process again. When the follicle does not grow a new hair, this can cause hair loss.

    Hair Grafting

    • Hair grafting, or hair transplant surgery, is a treatment for hair loss. Your doctor can take healthy follicles from the back and sides of your scalp and transplant them into bald areas, restoring your hair.

    Single Grafts

    • Hair grafting can be done one follicle at a time or in groups. Single hair grafts are often used to create a natural looking new hairline that your doctor can plan with precision.

    Micro-grafts

    • In a micro graft, your doctor removes three or four hair follicles at a time and transplants them as a group. This creates a fuller, thicker appearance in your new hair than a single graft.

    Considerations

    • Hair grafting can cause some complications, including scarring in the areas where hair follicles are harvested and the risk of infection at the transplant site.
