Types of Hair Replacement Surgery

Medical hair loss treatments focus on stopping future hair loss and encouraging dormant follicles to grow hair again. If your baldness is caused by follicles that have died, then hair replacement surgery could be your hair loss solution.
  1. Hair Replacement Surgery

    • Hair replacement surgery is performed in a doctor's office under local anesthesia. During the procedure, healthy follicles are removed from the back and sides of your scalp and transplanted to the bald parts of your scalp.

    Single Hair

    • Your doctor can transplant hair follicles in a few different ways. The most intensive type of hair replacement surgery involves moving follicles one at a time. This technique allows your doctor to create a natural-looking hairline.

    Micro and Mini-grafts

    • Micro- and mini-grafts of hair occur when your doctor transplants a few follicles at a time. This type of hair replacement is often combined with single hair replacement to create thicker-appearing hair behind a natural hairline.

    Complications

    • Complications are possible in all types of hair replacement surgery, including scarring, infection and bleeding.

    Considerations

    • If you do not have thick hair on the back and sides of your scalp, you might not be a candidate for hair replacement surgery. If your doctor performs an outdated type of the surgery, you could be left with unnatural looking rows of obviously replaced hair.
