What Are the Causes of a Round Patch of Hair Loss?

Patchy hair loss (alopecia) can be cause by several factors. In some cases, the hair may grow back on its own, and in other cases you may have to use a topical solution to aide in regrowth.

Hormonal

• Hormonal imbalances due to conditions such as pregnancy, polycystic ovarian syndrome, menopause and diabetes can cause sudden hair loss in a patch formation.

Illnesses

• Illnesses and extreme stress can cause hair loss or thinning called telogen effluvium. This form of hair loss generally clears up as soon as the bout of illness or stress is over.

Fungal Infections

• Fungal infections of the scalp can cause permanent hair loss. This infection is called tinea capitis. Tinea capitis appears as round, patchy hair loss with scales and black dots.

Traction

• Wearing tight hairstyles such as extension braids or cornrows can cause the hair to pull too hard from the scalp. This type of traction hair loss, if left untreated, can result in permanent hair loss.

Chemical Burn

• Using chemical relaxers and perms incorrectly can cause cicatricial alopecia (scarring hair loss). This hair loss forms from the chemicals being left on the scalp for too long.
