The Best Minerals for Hair Growth

Everyone wants a healthy head of hair. Nutrition can play a role in the promotion of hair health and, in some cases, has been shown to curb hair loss.
  1. Zinc

    • A deficiency in zinc is a common explanation for hair loss. In a 1996 study published in Obesity Surgery, patients who lost hair as a result of vertical gastroplasty surgery were given 200 mg zinc sulfate tablets three times a day. The study found that all the patients stopped losing their hair after taking the supplements.

    Caution

    • According to a 1990 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, excessive consumption of zinc can result in nausea, vomiting, lethargy and fatigue. The recommended daily allowance of zinc is 15 mg.

    Skeptics

    • According to a 2002 article by D.H. Rushton published in the journal Clinical Dermatology, there is little conclusive clinical evidence that zinc is an effective means for stopping hair loss.

    Iron

    • In the same article, Rushton cited the benefits of iron supplements for treating hair loss. In a clinical trial, he gave 72 mg of iron and 1.5 mg of L-lysine--an amino acid that helps with the uptake of iron--to 22 women who had excessive hair loss. Over a period of six months, Rushton reported a 39 percent reduction in hair loss.

    Calcium

    • According to a 1958 study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, women reported increased hair loss when certain types of shampoo decreased the amount of calcium in their hair. Calcium is an important mineral for hair and bone growth. A lack of calcium can result in weaker, smaller hairs that are more prone to fall out.

    Debate

    • There is no clear consensus among scientists regarding the best mineral for hair-loss treatment. Healthy hair is the result of a variety of dietary factors, including vitamins, minerals and fatty acids. Be aware of the benefits and risks involved if you decide to take mineral supplements. Consult a physician if any side effects occur as a result of supplement consumption.
