Hair Breakage Tips

A head of flowing, shiny tresses is what most of us aspire to have. For this to happen, your hair must be healthy and free of breakage or split ends. There are several tips you can follow that work to not only promote hair growth and elasticity, but also to heal damaged hair.
  1. Clean and Condition

    • The first tip in preventing hair breakage is to evaluate the products that you use on your hair. Using alcohol-based products will cause your hair to dry out. Products such as maximum hold hair sprays, spritz, hair gel and certain shampoos will all cause the hair to dry out and break easily. You should also use products for repairing dry and damaged hair. Many shampoo and conditioner brands have options for overly dry or damaged hair, as well as specific products used to help the hair retain oil and moisture. Select a good conditioner. At least once per week, you should use a leave-in conditioner that contains olive oil, aloe or many of the other oils that promote hair elasticity. This conditioner should be left in the hair for at least 20 minutes. The hair should be covered and, if possible, you should sit under a dryer during this time. The heat allows the oils to distribute and penetrate the hair follicles.

    Moisturize

    • Make sure your hair stays moisturized. Washing the hair every day will not help moisturize it or keep it from breaking. Too much water will cause the hair to over-dry which promotes further hair breakage and split ends. You should wash your hair no more than three times per week, but you should moisturize the hair daily. Moisturizers that contain vegetable oils or herbs are best since they promote healthy hair.

    Avoid Heat

    • If you use heat in your hair, you should use heat serum products to prevent burning the hair. These products sheen the hair and protect it from damage caused by overheating dry hair. These products can be used during the blow-drying process and with hot combs or flat irons. You should also take note that even with these serums, damage from overheating may still occur. For this reason, you should minimize the use of heating tools on your hair.

    Choose a Loose Hairstyle

    • Wear loose, flowing hairstyles. Loose ponytails, braids or flowing hair are all good styles. Wearing tight ponytails, cornrows or braided extensions all cause traction hair loss and hair breakage. In addition to wearing loose hairstyles, make sure that you tie your hair up at night. This keeps your hair from rubbing out on the pillow and tangling.
