Use a minoxidil solution. According to the American Hair Loss Association, minoxidil applied directly to the scalp stimulates hair growth. Minoxidil is the only FDA approved treatment for hair loss and is the active ingredient in the hair loss product Rogaine, but is also available over-the-counter in generic forms. Both Rogaine and generic hair loss products contain a 2 percent solution of minoxidil, but some generic brands may contain a higher amount that may cause adverse reactions, such as itchy, dry scalp.

Increase iron intake, along with vitamin C. Hair growth slows when there is an insufficient supply of iron in the body. Women should take an iron supplement to ensure they are receiving the recommended 18mg of iron daily. Additionally, since vitamin C aids in the absorption of iron in the body, women should drink a glass of orange juice to boost iron absorption.

Ask a doctor about androgen receptor inhibitors. Aldactone (spironolacetone) pills may help women to stop hair loss and regrow hair. According to the American College of Osteopathic Dermatology, women who have not yet reached menopause may experience better results from spironolacetone pills than those who have already entered menopause.

Try hormone replacement therapy. For menopausal women hormone replacement pills, such as Prempro plus Aldactone, can be used to treat female hair loss.

If all else fails, surgical procedures may be an option. Hair transplant surgery can be successful in women with the new follicular unit and minigraft techniques. This surgery is completed by moving skin that contains hair follicles from one part of the body to bald areas of the scalp. Once transplanted, hair continues to regrow naturally.
