What Are the Causes of Hair Loss Around Hair Line?

When most people begin to lose hair, they notice it thinning from the front. Hair thinning from the hairline can be the sign of several forms of alopecia, caused by anything from traction to genetics.
  1. Traction

    • Wearing hairstyles that are too tight such as braided extensions, cornrows and tight updos can cause traction to the scalp. This traction causes the hair to pull away from the scalp and out of the hair follicles, which results in hair loss, especially around the hairline.

    Telogen Effluvium

    • Telogen effluvium caused by stress and illness can cause you to shed more hair than usual. At anytime, 80 to 90 percent of hair is in active stage and 10 to 20 percent is in resting stage. Telogen effluvium causes more hair than usual to enter this resting stage.

    Hormonal Imbalances

    • Hormonal imbalances from conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, thyroid conditions and menopause can cause your hair to start thinning out more notably around the hairline. These hairs are controlled by androgens (male hormones) and are more susceptible to thinning.

    Male-Pattern Hair Loss

    • Male-pattern hair loss is the natural progression of hair loss in men. This hair loss starts from the hairline and recedes back into the crown.

    Chemical

    • Chemical relaxers left on the hair beyond the time allotted can result in hair loss all over the scalp. Since the hair in the front of the scalp is thinner, leaving it on for too long may result in hair loss in this area.
