Fix a Flaky Scalp

1
Determine the cause of your flaky scalp. Factors that contribute to a flaky scalp include dandruff, eczema, head lice, and ringworm.
-
2
Look for signs of pain, swelling, drainage of pus, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. If you see or experience any of these symptoms, see a doctor, as a skin infection may be present.
-
3
Wash your hair daily with anti-dandruff shampoo to treat flakes caused by dandruff. This will decrease the build up of oils on your scalp and in turn stop the flaking. See your doctor if commercial shampoos still leave you flaking, as your doctor can recommend stronger prescription medicated shampoo.
-
4
Use oil-free hair products to avoid getting dandruff. This will reduce the oil build up on the scalp.
-
5
Treat head lice by purchasing an over the counter prescription medication. These come in shampoo form, lotion, or cream. Oral pills also offer the same benefits.
-
6
Prevent head lice from spreading by regularly checking your children's heads. Remind your children not to share combs or hats with other children.
-
7
Take antifungal medication for ringworm. Antifungal shampoos will also treat ringworm, but must be used in coordination with oral medication, as shampoos cannot reach the root of your infected hair.
-
8
Keep your skin clean and dry to avoid contracting ringworm. Shampoo with Selsun Blue or Head and Shoulders if you fear you have come in contact with someone with ringworm.
