Remedies for Hair Loss at the Temples
As you age, your hairline matures. Generally, this includes some receding over the temples. This may occur anywhere from your late teens to your late fifties. While slight maturation is common, some people experience dramatic hair loss over the temples. For these people, there are several options to prevent further loss or restore the hair.-
Underlying Condition
-
There are many causes of hair loss. The most common cause of hair loss is genetics. However, hair loss can also be caused by poor nutrition, certain medication, diseases, hormonal changes and infections. Depending on what is causing your hair loss, the best remedy may be to treat the underlying cause. For example, inadequate protein or iron can cause hair loss and thus supplements may be the best way to treat your hair loss. Similarly, many drugs used to treat arthritis and depression can cause hair loss. Thus, the best remedy may be to change the medications you are taking. You should consult with your doctor to determine what is causing your hair loss before considering the following remedies.
Medication
-
The two most popular medications for remedying hair loss are minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia). Both medications are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. However, minoxidil is available over-the-counter whereas finasteride is available by prescription only. Both medications have shown to slow hair loss and, in some cases, regrow hair. Other medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat hair loss include corticosteroids (a monthly injection into the scalp) and anthralin (a cream generally used when a scalp infection is causing the hair loss).
Surgery
-
There are two popular kinds of surgery to remedy hair loss. Scalp reduction therapy involves removing the hairless parts of your scalp and then stretching the parts of your scalp that have hair to replace them. Hair transplantation on the other hand involves taking skin graphs, which contain several hairs, from the back of your scalp and implanting them into the bald sections. Both methods can be expensive and several visits may be required. It should also be noted that some doctors are hesitant to implant hair grafts in the temple region to the extent that it would resemble a teenager's hairline. Rather, many doctors will insist on returning your hairline to the normal "mature" hairline that is representative of your age.
