Hair Loss Due to a Nervous Condition

According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, it is normal for us to lose up to 100 hairs a day in our average growth cycle. Any more than this could result from a shock to the system such as nervous conditions or stress.
  1. Identification

    • Hair loss due to nervous conditions will result in widespread hair thinning. You may notice you are seeing more hair than usual in the tub after a wash or in the brush after brushing.

    Type

    • This form of hair loss is called telogen effluvium. It is brought on by stress and periods of illness. The areas of the scalp usually affected by this condition are the hair line and crown.

    Causes

    • Nervous conditions such as anxiety disorders, panic disorders, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder may cause hair loss or thinning.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for the hair loss in the case of telogen effluvium is to treat the underline condition that is causing the hair loss. Once this condition is treated, hair loss should slow, and the hair should resume a normal growth process.

    Considerations

    • If you are treating your nervous condition and notice that you are still losing more hair than usual, see your physician for further evaluation. In the meanwhile, you can use Minoxidil (Rogaine) found over-the-counter to encourage re-growth.
