What Helps Hair Loss?

The normal rate of hair loss is between 50 to 100 strands per day and occurs as a natural part of the hair growth cycle. Nonhereditary hair loss may be easily reversed once the cause is identified.
  1. Causes

    • Treatable causes of hair loss include nutritional deficiency, excessive styling, hormones, drug-related side effects and scalp infections.

    Herbs

    • Chamomile may help stimulate hair growth when used topically. Steep 2 tablespoons of chamomile in 4 cups of hot water for 30 minutes, then strain and use as a hair rinse after bathing. Taking a saw palmetto supplement daily may also help support hair growth.

    Deficiencies

    • Iron deficiency occurs in menstruating women and can contribute to hair loss. Vitamin B12, biotin and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) are also essential to healthy hair growth. Natural foods are the best sources of these nutrients, but a high quality multivitamin can provide them in full.

    OTC Treatments

    • Over the counter topical solutions such as Rogaine may help delay hair loss and promote growth, but its effects are temporary and diminish over time. Specialty shampoos and hair products don't guarantee results, but may be useful in conjunction with other treatments.

    Prevention

    • Avoid dying, bleaching, relaxing or blow drying hair too frequently, all of which can weaken and thin hair. Tight ponytails, buns, braids and cornrows cause permanent hair loss (traction alopecia) by putting enormous pressure on the hair shaft and damaging the follicles. Opting for looser hairstyles is the best prevention.
