Wash hair frequently and condition it well. Wash your hair weekly using Nioxin or another product designed to stop hair loss and/or thinning. After washing, deep condition with a natural protein conditioner along with light conditioner designed to help with hair loss or damage.

Keep hair moisturized and healthy. Oil your scalp daily with shea butter or tea-tree oil to combat dryness (which could be contributing to hair loss) while stimulating new hair growth. In addition to oiling your scalp, have split or damaged ends trimmed often to keep your hair healthy.

Avoid excess heat and chemicals whenever possible. Extend the time between relaxers and touch-ups when applicable to reduce the amount of chemicals to which your hair is exposed. Also, air-dry hair whenever possible instead of blow-drying, and flat iron/curl the hair as little as possible.

If hair loss continues in spite of treatment, discuss your situation with your physician. Sudden or excessive hair loss in African Americans can sometimes be attributed to stress, vitamin deficiency or even skin disorders. A physician will be able to recommend over-the-counter products or prescribe stronger medications if necessary.
