Barometric Pressure & Sinuses

The drop in barometric pressure can affect sinuses. It may cause a severe sinus headache.

The Facts

• The drop in barometric pressure is usually caused by a cold front passing through. You can typically feel a drop in pressure just before a big storm.

Sinuses

• When barometric pressure drops, it causes the pressure in the sinus cavity to press on the surrounding bone causing a severe sinus headache.

Treatment

• A good over-the-counter sinus and headache relief medication is very effective. You can also use a saline solution to clear sinus cavities.

Prevention/Solution

• The good news with barometric pressure is we usually have at bit of a warning that it is coming. If sinus pressure and headaches are common you can take a sinus medication at the first signs of pressure change.

Warning

• Overuse of headache medications can actually cause severe headaches. This is known as Medication Overuse Headache or MOH. If you are having chronic headaches seek medical advice.
