Headaches Caused by Chemicals

Headaches can be caused by many things, including chemicals in cleaning supplies or chemicals added to food. Learning what triggers headaches can help you reduce the number of headaches you experience.
  1. Triggers

    • Many chicken broths contain MSG.

      According to the book “Migraines for Dummies” common food additives such as aspartame, MSG, nitrites and sulfites may cause headaches. Check food labels, and become familiar with alternate names for the chemicals.

    Identification

    • Kepp a record of where and when headaches occur.

      Keep a journal of when headaches occur. Record important information such a description of the headache, what food or beverages you have consumed and any chemicals you might be working with

    Prevention/Solution

    • Select or create your own natural cleaning products free from harsh chemicals.

      Review your journal to notice patterns of when headaches occur. Some people may be able to avoid alleviate headaches by avoiding food triggers. Since some cleaning chemicals have harsh chemicals, select natural cleaners instead.

    Symptoms

    • According to the Chemical Sensitivity Foundation, symptoms can be different from person to person; common symptoms of chemical sensitivity include headaches and nausea. The exact causes are unknown.

    Treatment

    • Follow direction for OTC headache treatments.

      Try using over-the-counter medicines such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. For headaches trigger by chemical spills, try airing out the room.
