Pain Medication for Headache
-
Aspirin
-
Aspirin or acetylsalicylic acid is one of the most popular over-the-counter headache medications available. Aspirin should not be given to children because of the risk of Reye's Syndrome, a dangerous disease primarily affecting children.
Acetaminophen
-
Acetaminophen is another medication used to treat headache pain. A common brand name of acetaminophen is Tylenol. Many people prefer acetaminophen for headache relief because it does not cause the side effects, such as an upset stomach, that aspirin can cause.
Ibuprofen
-
Ibuprofen is classified as a NSAID or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug. Ibuprofen works by reducing inflammation. Ibuprofen should not be combined with other over-the-counter or prescription pain relief medications.
Triptans
-
Migraines are a more severe type of headache that are treated with prescription medications called triptans. Two such medications are Maxalt and Zomig. Triptans work by blocking nerve receptors of serotonin, a neurotransmitter thought to trigger migraine headaches.
When to see a Doctor
-
