Using Atenolol for Headaches

Headaches are a common medical condition, but many individuals suffer from headache pain so severe that it can be disabling. The prescription medication atenolol, generic for the brand name Tenormin, is a beta-blocker used to treat such heart conditions as rapid heartbeat, hypertension and chest pain. It is also used to prevent migraine headaches.
  1. What Is a Migraine

    • Migraines are like headaches but the pain is commonly described as extreme or pulsating in one area, such as the back of the head or the eyes. Before experiencing this direct attack of pain, common warning signs include tiredness, depression, irritability, vomiting and sensitivity to noise or light. A migraine can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, and is recurring.

If you experience these symptoms, see your doctor so he can determine whether you suffer from migraine headaches.

    How Atenolol Works

    • Atenolol is prescribed to help prevent the attack of a migraine headache. When taken regularly, the chance of a migraine occurring is reduced. How atenolol prevents migraines is unknown. The correlation may be through the beta-blocker action restraining elevation in blood pressure and artery constriction.

    Concerns

    • FDA-approved atenolol has some common side effects, including dry mouth, fatigue, drowsiness and decreased physical strength. Decreased libido, weight changes, fainting and trouble sleeping are not as common, but also are possible side effects.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any prescribed or over-the-counter medications that you are taking. Some can interact, such as high blood pressure, anti-diabetic and alpha-blocker drugs, diet aids and cold formulas, causing serious complications.

Inform your doctor if you are nursing, pregnant or are planning to get pregnant, as there is possible risk to the fetus and negative effects to a nursing baby when taking this medication.

    When to Stop

    • Your doctor will monitor you progress while taking atenolol to determine whether any changes in dosage or medication are needed. Do not suddenly stop taking the medication on your own. If you experience any serious side effects, such as trouble breathing, severe dizziness or an allergic reaction of swelling or rash, contact your doctor.
