How to Get Rid of Sinusitus Headaches

Allergy problems or a sinus infection can easily lead to sinusitus headache. Usually the cause is when thick mucous collects around the nasal and sinus passages. The blockage leads to an intense headache. The symptoms of this type of headache include a deep, nonstop pain in the cheekbones, forehead and nose areas. Other symptoms that are present include facial swelling, runny nose and stopped up or aching ears. It can be difficult to get rid of sinusitus headaches if it is not caught early on.

Instructions

Drinking warm fluids like coffee or tea can bring immediate comfort. Sinusitus headaches are common during dry weather resulting in dry, clogged nasal passages. Drinking fluids also provides moisture and hydration to your body.

Using a humidifier can be helpful. Boil water in the house to make the air more humid, or hold your head over a hot, steaming pot with a towel over your heat to trap in the moisture. Breathing in steam is a good way to ease the pain. It will help thin the mucous, which unclogs the nasal area.

Try applying a warm compress. You can simply wet a washcloth with hot water and hold it over your nose and cheeks. The compress provides instant warmth and pressure relief to clogged nasal passages. It also loosens mucous making it easier to clear away.

After a few hours of applying a hot compress, switch to a cold compress by running the washcloth under cold water and applying it directly to the forehead. This helps the sinus membranes shrink which will help relieve the headache.

Some over-the-counter medicines can provide relief. Antihistimines and decongestants are common treatments; but you should make sure you have a sinusitis headache before taking a decongestant otherwise it could actually make your headache worse. Severe pain with infection usually requires antibiotics and more powerful pain relief in the form of corticosteroids. Corticosteroids will help reduce inflammation.
