Side Effects of Imatrex

Imitrex is a prescription medication used to treat migraine headaches. Imitrex narrows the blood vessels that surround the brain and reduces substances in the body that might lead to migraine symptoms. Imitrex can only treat a headache you already have. It cannot prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks. There are some side effects associated with using Imitrex.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Minor side effects include muscle ache, throwing up, nausea, diarrhea, drowsiness, feeling lightheaded, dizziness, redness or warmth on and under the skin, feelings of heaviness and pressure in parts of the body, sweating, drooling, numbing or burning sensations in the throat or nose, unpleasant taste in the mouth, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and congestion. Generally, these side effects subside on their one within a few days.

    Serious Side Effects

    • If you experience severe effects, stop using Imitrex immediately and get medical assistance. These include sudden weak or numb sensations (particularly on just one side of the body); sudden feelings of confusion or disorientation; vision, balance and speech issues; sudden headache; severe chest ache; seizures; blue or pale toes and fingers; tingling; rapid heart rate; stiffness of the muscles; coordination loss; hallucinations; bloody diarrhea and extreme stomachache.

    Allergic Reactions

    • Signs of an allergic reaction include tongue, lip, face or throat swelling; breaking out into hives; and having a difficult time breathing. If you experience these signs, stop using Imitrex and consult your doctor as soon as possible.

    Drug Interactions

    • Antidepressants such as Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, Effexor and Cymbalta can interact negatively with Imitrex, altering their effectiveness.

    Caution

    • Before taking Imitrex, notify your doctor of any other medications that you are taking. This applies both to over-the-counter and prescription medicines, as well as minerals, vitamins, dietary supplements and herbal products.
