Relief From a Tension Headache

Everyone deals with tension headaches from time to time. The most common type of headache, this condition often results from stress or fatigue. Most tension-type headaches are mild and disappear within a few hours or days. Occasionally, tension headaches become chronic, and a sufferer feels as if a tight band is being held around her forehead. Fortunately, there are quick ways to relieve a tension headache.

    • Pain medications offer quick relief from a tension headache. However, moderation is key, and the overuse of pain relievers can result in rebound headaches. Take medications as directed by the package. Effective remedies for tension headaches include over-the-counter medications such as naproxen sodium, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin. Some pain medications for tension headaches include caffeine. Additionally, drinking a caffeinated beverage along with pain relievers can ease tension-type headaches.

    Reduce Stress

    • Mental stress and fatigue are primary causes of tension-type headaches. Rest your body and mind to ease headaches caused by these factors. Practice stress management techniques and find ways to relax. To ease stress, practice breathing exercises and dispel negative thoughts. Adopting a hobby and exercise can also relieve mental stress and stop tension headaches. If lack of sleep contributes to tension headaches, try to sleep at least eight hours a night and take short breaks during the day. A 10 to 20 minute nap can recharge your body. Taking computer breaks can alleviate the eye fatigue and tension that can contribute to tension headaches.

    Ease Muscle Tension

    • Sometimes, tension headaches result from muscle tension in the face, neck and back. Learning how to relax can get rid of headaches. If this doesn't work, applying an ice pack or placing a heating pad on your back, neck or forehead can relax muscles and relieve tension. For best results, apply the compress for 10 to 20 minutes, and then remove for 10 to 20 minutes. Additionally, taking a warm bath, relaxing in a hot tub or enjoying a massage can quickly ease muscle tension and provide relief from a tension-type headache.
