What to Take for a Sinus Headache While Pregnant

Sinus headaches can cause pain and fatigue, and pregnancy can make the symptoms worse. Although being pregnant eliminates some types of medications for treating your sinus headaches, there are other options for reducing your symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Library of Medicine, you can take certain pain relievers and antihistamines for sinus headaches while pregnant.

Acetaminophen

• Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that you can take while you are pregnant to reduce pain in your face and head caused by sinus headaches. Make sure to get your doctor's approval first, though.

Antibiotics

• If you have a sinus infection that's causing your sinus headache, your doctor may prescribe oral antibiotics such as amoxicillin to treat your infection.

Antihistamines

• Over-the-counter antihistamines such as Benadryl may be recommended by your doctor to reduce sinus and nasal mucus that cause you to get sinus headaches.

Decongestants

• Decongestants such as Zyrtec-D are medications that may be recommended by your doctor to help mucus flow out of your sinuses and reduce your sinus headache symptoms.

Nasal Irrigation

• If you do not want to take medications, using a saline solution to perform nasal irrigation with either a spray bottle or a neti pot is a natural way to treat sinus headaches while you are pregnant.

Nasal Sprays

• Your doctor may prescribe a nasal spray such as Nasocort while you are pregnant to reduce symptoms of sinus headaches and congestion by reducing inflammation in your sinus passages.
