How to Relieve Sinus Headache Pain

Unrelenting sinus headache pain can put a major cramp in your plans. Experts at the Mayo Clinic state that home care is sufficient enough to relive sinus headache pain in most cases, but if you do not find relief within a few days, make an appointment with your doctor.

Instructions

    • 1

Drink lots of water when you have a sinus headache. Whether the pain is caused by a change in the weather, everyday allergies or an infection, fluids will both prevent you from becoming dehydrated and also promote drainage. Drink at least eight 8 oz. glasses of water or other clear fluids each day.

    • 2

Take an over-the-counter or prescription strength decongestant or antihistamine if your sinus headache is the result of seasonal allergies. Medications such as Claritin or Benadryl can help dry up excess mucous and relieve sinus pressure. Speak to your doctor before beginning such a regimen.

    • 3

Relieve sinus headache pain with ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Again, make sure your physician knows about all of the other medications you are taking.

    • 4

Sleep in a semi-reclining position if sinus pressure makes it uncomfortable for you to rest in a flat position. A reclining chair may help you position yourself more comfortably.

    • 5

Make an appointment for a physical exam if your sinus headache is accompanied by thick green, yellow or bloody mucous or simply if your headache has lasted more than 3 days. You may have a sinus infection that is treated with antibiotics.
