Use a heat or cold pack. Applying heat or coldness to the temple area can relax tense muscles and ease tension headaches. Apply the heat or cold pack for 10 to 15 minutes, and then remove for 10 to 15 minutes.

Massage the temples. Stress and anxiety contribute to tension headaches. Find a quiet place to relax. Close your eyes and gently massage your temples in 10- to 15-minute intervals. Repeat several times throughout the day to relax tense facial muscles.

Give your eyes a break. Eyestrain caused by staring at a computer screen, driving or watching television can trigger a tension headache in the temple area. Take periodic breaks to rest your eyes and blink frequently.

Get plenty of rest. Sleeping less than six hours a night can result in persistent fatigue and cause a variety of body aches such as tension headaches. Resolve to sleep at least six to eight hours a night.
