How to Identify Symptoms of a Tension Headache
Nearly everyone suffers from headaches once in a while, but tension headaches are the most common. This type of headache often occurs in individuals more than 15 days of the month. Such headaches are considered to be chronic in nature, although some individuals experience only occasional (episodic) tension headaches. Believed to be caused by a combination of changes in brain chemicals and problems with the central nervous system, tension headaches are also believed to be caused by stress. Stress causes a tightening of the muscles of the jaw, face and neck, leading to a headache. Men and women, as well as children may be affected by tension headaches. Learning how to identify the symptoms of a tension headache may help to relieve symptoms and to initiate changes to prevent them.Things You'll Need

1
Pay attention to where headache pain originates from the next time you feel headache pressure. Tension headaches most often cause a dull and steady pain on the sides of the head, near the temples. Pain may be mild or severe, but generally tends to appear gradually.

2
Watch for signs of the "band around the head" sensations when experiencing a headache, one of the prime identifying symptoms of a tension headache. Individuals often state that they feel like their head is locked in a vice that keeps getting tighter and tighter. You may take non-prescription pain relievers to help relieve pain, but always follow instructions for their use.

3
Observe signs of a clenched jaw if you feel a headache coming on. If you notice that you are clenching your jaws or facial muscles, make every effort to relax. Many individuals try facial exercises or practice taking several deep breaths in an effort to soothe and relax muscles throughout the body.

4
Watch your diet. Are you eating foods that are known to cause headaches, like chocolate? Are you drinking adequate amounts of water on a daily basis? Many individuals who suffer from headaches do so because of lack of proper and adequate nutrition and hydration.

5
Check your stress levels. If you engage in a stressful or mentally demanding work environment, find ways to de-stress at the end of the workday. Engage in vigorous exercise or meditate. Take the time to 'wind down' and transition between work and home.
