How to Take a Pulse

Step 1: Locate the pulse

- The pulse can be felt at several points on the body, but the most common location is the radial artery in the wrist.

-To find this artery, place two fingers (index and middle) on the inside of your wrist, about an inch below the base of your thumb.

- Press gently until you feel a strong, steady beat.

- If you have difficulty finding the pulse, try moving your fingers slightly up or down the wrist.

Step 2: Determine the rate

- When you start to take your pulse, look at your watch and count the number of beats you feel in 15 seconds.

- Multiply that number by 4 to get your heart rate in beats per minute (bpm).

- Count for 60 seconds if doing pulse oximetry.

-For example, if you count 24 beats in 15 seconds, multiply 24 by 4 to get a pulse rate of 96 bpm.

- It's best to take your pulse after you've been resting.

Step 3: Assess the regularity

- As you're counting the pulse, pay attention to the regularity of the beats.

- Normally, the beats are evenly spaced. If the pulse is irregular, see your doctor.

Step 4: Repeat as necessary

- You may need to repeat this process several times a day, depending on your medical condition or doctor's instructions.

- Keep track of your pulse rates and bring the record to each doctor visit.
