Cold Remedies for Heart Patients

Suffering from a cold can be miserable but people who have heart trouble have the added complication of needing to be cautious when choosing medicine. Heart patients have to be very selective even with over-the-counter remedies, but there are still a wide variety of remedies available.
  1. Decongestants

    • Generally heart patients need to avoid decongestants, which work to alleviate cold symptoms by constricting blood vessels and reducing the feeling of blockage. Most people can take these without any health risk but someone with a heart condition needs to be extra cautious. Anything that constricts blood vessels can affect the flow of blood, which can be very dangerous to a heart patient.

    Zinc

    • Although the effectiveness of zinc isn't proven, it is safe for a heart patient to take. Zinc has shown in some patients to be helpful in warding off a cold if it is taken in the very early stages. Zinc can also be taken in combination with other medications such as Benadryl with no side effects. Zinc should not be taken for more than five consecutive days or the patient may experience dry mouth and thirst.

    Echinacea

    • Echinacea is a bush native to North America. American Indians used it as a treatment for numerous conditions including headaches, nausea and flu. It is also known for its natural antibiotic and antiseptic properties. Echinacea is also very effective in fighting colds if it is taken at the first sign of symptoms. It is safe for heart patients to use for colds as well as other ailments.

    Aspirin

    • Aspirin is safe for some heart patients and can even be beneficial. Aspirin thins the blood and helps it circulate faster throughout the body. For cold symptoms such as sore throat, body aches and headache, aspirin is an excellent remedy. Aspirin can also reduce fevers and has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Be sure to talk to a doctor before taking aspirin if you have a heart condition.

    Fluids

    • Fluids are essential for anyone suffering from a cold. Hot liquids such as teas are perfect to soothe sore throats and unblock nasal passages. Fruit juices keep the body hydrated as well as provide extra sources of vitamins. Hot soups provide nourishment as well as help clear the chest and lungs of mucous. Heart patients will need to monitor the salt and sugar content in some of these home remedies but in general they are safe.
