Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of unstable angina. Risk factors include diabetes, aging, high blood pressure, high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, lack of exercise, obesity and smoking. Males and those individuals with a family history of coronary heart disease before the age of 50 are also at higher risk for developing the condition.
