Cardiovascular disease, commonly referred to as heart disease, covers a wide range of conditions. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Heart disease is the No. 1 worldwide killer of men and women."
  1. Symptoms

    • Different types of heart disease come with a variety of symptoms, including shortness of breath, chest pain, numbness in the arms and legs, dizziness, slow or rapid heartbeat and fainting.

    Blood Vessels

    • Heart disease caused by the blood vessels (cardiovascular disease) is characterized by blockage. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, chest pain and weakness or coldness in your arms or legs.

    Abnormal Heartbeats

    • Abnormal heartbeat (heart arrhythmia) is a condition in which the heart either beats too slow or too fast. Symptoms include racing heartbeat, light-headedness, dizziness, fainting and a fluttering in your chest.

    Heart Defects

    • People with heart disease caused by heart defects may show signs of pale or blue skin and swelling in places such as the abdomen or around the eyes.

    Thick Heart Muscle

    • Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the heart muscles stiffens and thickens in size. Cardiomyopathy is often asymptomatic, but when symptoms do occur, they may include swelling of your feet and legs, bloating, fatigue and irregular heartbeat.
