Cardiac Diseases
Many different diseases can affect the human heart. According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death. If any part of the heart is damaged or diseased, it can have serious consequences for the human body.-
Coronary Arteries
-
The coronary arteries supply the myocardium, or muscular layer of the heart, with needed oxygen and nutrients. It is imperative to the health of the heart that these vessels function well.
Coronary Artery Disease
-
Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the arteries narrow and limit the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle.
Atherosclerosis
-
Atherosclerosis is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries. This buildup is typically caused by cholesterol and fatty deposits, which cause a narrowing of the blood vessels.
Arteriosclerosis
-
Arteriosclerosis is the thickening, or hardening, of artery walls that usually causes a rise in blood pressure. Aging causes some degree of arteriosclerosis.
Infectious Diseases of the Heart
-
Some infectious diseases can cause inflammation of one of the cardiac tissue layers, resulting in permanent heart damage. A virus or type of bacteria typically causes these conditions.
Prevention
-
A healthy lifestyle is the best defense against heart disease. Maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and exercising will help keep your heart healthy.
