Side Effects of HCTZ

HCTZ (Hydrochlorothiazide) is prescribed to treat hypertension and edema associated with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disorders and certain medications. Classified as a diuretic, or water pill, it helps reduce swelling and water retention. HCTZ is the generic for the brand name Microzide. As with all prescription medications, side effects may occur while using HCTZ.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects while taking HCTZ include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, light-headedness, appetite loss, nausea and blurred vision. Most medications can cause side effects that are normal and can be tolerated. If these side effects worsen or become severe, contact a health care professional to discuss the situation. When taking new medications, an adjustment period is normally required for the body to adapt.

The serious side effects of HCTZ include allergic reaction, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, light-headed, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, muscle pain, muscle weakness, numbness, dark urine, clay-colored stools and jaundice

    Warnings

    • Some side effects of HCTZ may be dangerous and individuals should be cautious. These dangerous side effects include hypotension (low blood pressure), decreased kidney function, raised cholesterol levels, increased triglyceride levels and inability to urinate. Consult a health care professional immediately, these side effects may need immediate medical attention.

    Precautions

    • Prior to starting HCTZ therapy, inform the physician of any pre-existing medical conditions. Special testing may be required before taking HCTZ if prior medical conditions include kidney disease, liver disease, gout, asthma, diabetes, allergies and/or allergic to sulfa drugs. After the consultation, the physician will prescribe the proper dosage based on current medical condition and history.

    Drug Interactions

    • Drug interactions may occur when one or more medications are taken simultaneously. When interactions occur, this may cause side effects or ineffectiveness of the medications. Drugs that may cause an interaction include insulin, diabetes medications, blood pressure medications, corticosteroids, norepinephrine, muscle relaxers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs). It is important to consult a physician about all medications and supplements prior to starting HCTZ therapy.
