Test for an Enlarged Heart

An enlarged heart is often asymptomatic, which means it presents no symptoms. However, if your doctor suspects that you are suffering from an enlarged heart, there are various tests to confirm the diagnosis. It is important to properly diagnose this condition, as it can be a warning sign of a much bigger problem.

  1. Chest X-ray

    • By performing a chest X-ray, your doctor will be able to see the condition of your lungs as well as your heart. A chest X-ray will usually be the first confirmation of an enlarged heart. However, it is important to do more tests to determine the underlying factor causing the condition.

    Electrocardiogram

    • During an electrocardiogram, electrodes will be attached to your skin in order for the electrical activity of your heart to be recorded. The activity appears as waves, and these waves allow your doctor to physically see the way your heart is beating. By looking at the printout of the electrical activity, your doctor can determine if there are any heart rhythm problems or if your heart has been damaged by a heart attack.

    Echocardiogram

    • The echocardiogram is an excellent way to diagnose and monitor an enlarged heart. This test produces a video image of your heart by using sound waves. The echocardiogram can evaluate all of the heart's chambers, determining if they are the right size. An echocardiogram can also check for evidence of previous heart attacks, assess your heart valves, check for evidence of congenital heart disease and determine how efficiently your heart is pumping.

    CT Scans and MRIs

    • CT scans and MRIs are most often used to diagnose heart failure. However, they are gaining popularity when it comes to diagnosing other heart problems, such as enlarged hearts. CT scans use X-rays to produce images of your heart and chest. An MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce an image of your heart. Both of these tests allow your doctor to physically view the size of your heart and determine if it is enlarged.

    Blood Tests

    • Blood tests can help doctors determine if your heart is abnormally large. By analyzing your blood, your doctor can look for certain chemicals that indicate an enlarged heart. Blood tests are also beneficial because they can help your doctor solve the underlying problem of your condition, which is crucial in determining the right course of treatment.

    Cardiac Catheterization and Biopsy

    • Cardiac catheterization and biopsy is performed by inserting a small tube in your groin area and guiding it up to your heart. Once the tube reaches your heart, a small piece of the heart tissue is collected for analysis. During the procedure, pictures of your arteries can be taken to determine if there is any blockage that needs to be addressed.
