Heart Problems

In the United States, more people die from heart disease than from cancer. To protect yourself and your family, you should be able to identify the types of heart disease and their symptoms.
  1. Coronary Artery Disease

    • Coronary artery disease is the most common of the heart problems and is the main cause of heart attacks. Coronary artery disease is caused by a limited supply of blood to the heart, which causes weakening of the heart muscles.

    Congenital Heart Failure

    • Congenital heart failure is also referred to as hereditary heart disease. This heart problem is passed through family lines but is not necessarily genetic. Congenial heart failure usually stems from a family history of living an unhealthy lifestyle.

    Congestive Heart Failure

    • Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart fails to pump and distribute blood properly. If left untreated, this can create problems with other organs in the body.

    Pulmonary Heart Disease

    • Pulmonary heart disease originates in the lungs. Inhibited blood flow to the lungs creates unusual pressure on the heart, forcing it to pump harder. This can cause an enlarged heart.

    Rheumatic Heart Disease

    • Rheumatic heart disease is an extremely rare condition caused by strep throat. The fever that accompanies strep throat damages the valves of the heart.

    Symptoms

    • Some overlapping symptoms of all types of heart disease are chest pain, nausea and shortness of breath.
