How to Avoid Coronary Artery Disease
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is caused by atherosclerosis, a thickening of the inside walls of the coronary arteries. Plaque builds up on the inside of the arteries, impeding the flow of blood. CAD can lead to angina (chest pain) or a heart attack. Half a million Americans die of CAD every year. Over 13 million live with the condition. Fortunately, CAD is largely preventable.Instructions

Do not smoke. Smoking is the leading cause of coronary artery disease. If you do smoke, ask your doctor about quitting. If you don't smoke, don't start.

2
Exercise at least 4 to 6 times a week, 30 minutes at a time. Regular exercise strengthens the cardiovascular system and keeps your weight in check. Obesity is another major cause of CAD.

Eat a balanced diet that is low in sodium (salt) and saturated fat. Vegetables should make up the bulk of your diet. Don't add extra salt when cooking. Use olive oil instead of butter. Your doctor can help you design a diet that suits your lifestyle and helps prevent coronary artery disease.
