Symptoms of a Leaking Heart Valve
-
Identification
-
Your heart has four valves. There are two on each side of the heart. One valve separates the upper chambers of the heart (the atria). The other two valves allow blood to flow from the bottom chambers (ventricles) into the body. These valves ensure that the blood flows in the right direction.
Respiratory Symptoms
-
If your valves are leaking, then the heart has to pump faster in order to deliver enough blood to the body. This can leave you feeling short of breath even during routine activities. Eventually this may occur when lying down as well.
Pain
-
If your heart is not able to pump enough blood, then there will be a lack of oxygen as well. If the heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen, you will experience chest pain whenever you exert yourself.
Heart Activity
-
Since your heart must pump harder in order to deliver enough blood and oxygen, you may experience rapid heart beats or an elevated heart rate. This may be felt as palpitations.
Other Symptoms
-
Without enough blood and oxygen you may feel faint, weak or dizzy during activities. In severe cases this can happen even while at rest. Your physician may hear a murmur when listening to your heart.
Complications
-
Without treatment your heart muscle can become overworked and eventually it will enlarge. Blood clots may form and fluid may back up into the lungs.
