How to Lower Homocysteine Level

Homocysteine is an amino acid that is found in the blood of the human body. A normal level does not pose a health risk, but high levels can lead to several medical problems. High homocysteine levels can cause damage to the arteries and cause blood clotting problems. If you have blood work that shows a high homocysteine level, you need to lower it.

Instructions

    • 1

Speak to your doctor about your blood work results. Find out how high your homocysteine level is and ways that you can go about lowering it.

    • 2

Add more folate to your diet. The best way to do this is to consume more fruits and vegetables. Leafy green vegetables are particularly good sources of folate. Beans and lentils also have a high amount of folate in them.

    • 3

See about a vitamin B-6 supplement. If you are not able to naturally get enough vitamin B-6 from your diet, purchase a supplement.

    • 4

Inquire about a vitamin B-12 supplement as well. Both vitamin supplements can be found in health foods stores.

    • 5

Get your levels rechecked every couple of months. After you make diet changes and add supplements, your doctor will want to have your homocysteine level checked again. Higher vitamin doses may be recommended if your levels remain elevated.
