Links of Cardiac Chain Survival?
Chain of SurvivalThe Chain of Survival is the standard set of procedures for saving the life of a person who is in cardiac arrest. The chain of survival consists of four main links:
1. Early recognition and activation of emergency response (calling 911)
2. Early Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
3. Early defibrillation
4. Advanced medical care and post-resuscitation care
1. Early recognition and activation of emergency response
When a person collapses, it is essential to recognise that they may be in cardiac arrest. The following are signs of cardiac arrest:
- Unconscious and unresponsive
- Not breathing or only gasping
- No pulse
If you suspect that a person is in cardiac arrest, call 911 immediately. If you are alone, begin CPR while waiting for help to arrive.
2. Early CPR
If you are not trained in CPR, the dispatcher will guide you through the steps. CPR involves providing chest compressions and rescue breathing until the person's heartbeat is restored.
3. Early Defibrillation
Defibrillation is a medical procedure that uses a defibrillator to deliver a controlled electrical shock to the heart. This shock can help restore the heart to a normal rhythm. Defibrillators are available in many public places, such as shopping malls, office buildings, and airports. If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available, use it as soon as possible.
4. Advanced Medical Care and Post-Resuscitation Care
If the person's heartbeat is restored, it is essential to provide advanced medical care. This may include oxygen therapy, intubation, intravenous fluids, and medications. Post-resuscitation care is also essential to help the person recover from the cardiac arrest.
The Chain of Survival is a team effort
Every citizen can help save lives by learning CPR and using an AED. If you see someone who is in cardiac arrest, don't hesitate to help. Your intervention could save their life.
