Red Heads & Heart Disease

Once a year women are becoming redheads for heart disease. It's all part of the American Heart Association's efforts to increase awareness about heart disease in women using the color red as a central theme.
  1. Event

    • Paul Mitchell The School in Costa Mesa, California, sponsors a "Change of Color, Change of Heart" event during which stylists transform women into redheads for free. This event takes place in February to coincide with American Heart Month.

    Purpose

    • Women dye their hair red to create awareness about heart disease as the number one killer of women. Some of the redheads are survivors of heart disease; others are family members and friends wanting to honor the memory of a loved one who died of heart disease.

    History

    • The American Heart Association launched the "Go Red For Women" initiative in 2004 to save lives by encouraging women to become aware of their heart disease risk factors and to make healthy lifestyle choices. The resulting "National Wear Red for Women Day" is held the first Friday in February.
