What is a third-degree heart block?
A third-degree heart block is a complete blockage of the electrical signals between the atrioventricular node (AV node) and the ventricles. This means that the ventricles, which are the lower chambers of the heart, do not receive any signals from the atria, which are the upper chambers of the heart. As a result, the ventricles contract slowly and irregularly, and the heart rate is very slow.
Third-degree heart block is a serious condition and can be fatal if not treated. Treatment options include medication, surgery, and pacemakers.
Symptoms of third-degree heart block include:
- Light-headedness
- Dizziness
- Fainting
- Slow heart rate
- Chest pain
- Shortness of breath
If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor immediately.
