What is the THE BIRTH DEFECT OF A hole in heart between upper chambers?
The birth defect of a hole in the heart between the upper chambers is known as an atrial septal defect (ASD). It occurs when the wall (septum) that separates the two upper chambers of the heart (the atria) does not close properly during fetal development, resulting in an abnormal opening between the atria. This opening allows blood to flow between the atria, causing an abnormal flow of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood. ASD is one of the most common types of congenital heart defects and can range in size from small, causing minimal symptoms, to large, leading to significant health problems. Depending on the size and location of the defect, treatment options may include surgical repair or device closure.
