How long can cardiac muscles be deprived of oxygen before they start to die?

The heart is very sensitive to oxygen deprivation and can only survive for a few minutes without it. If the heart is deprived of oxygen for more than 5 minutes, it will start to die. This is why heart attacks are so dangerous - the longer the heart is deprived of oxygen, the more damage is done and the less likely the person is to survive.
