What is automaticity of the heart?

Automaticity

- It refers to the ability of the heart to generate its own electrical impulses without any external stimulation.

- This property is essential for the heart to be able to contract rhythmically and pump blood throughout the body.

- The sinoatrial (SA) node, located in the right atrium, is the primary pacemaker of the heart. It generates electrical impulses at a regular rate. These impulses travel through the heart, causing the atria to contract and then the ventricles to contract.

- If the SA node fails to generate impulses or if the impulses are blocked from reaching the ventricles, other parts of the heart, such as the atrioventricular (AV) node or the bundle of His, can take over the pacemaking function and generate impulses to keep the heart beating.
