What Is a Cardiac Chair in a Hospital Bed?
Engineering advancements in hospital beds continue to evolve, to the relief of the patient. Beds are now coming with options on top of options. This increases the cost of the bed, of course, and a patient's comfort.-
History
-
Surgeons discovered in the 1940s that patients recover faster the sooner they are out of bed and walking. By the 1950s, "chair therapy" was common and short walks were encouraged. By sitting upright, or slightly reclined, a patient has an easier time breathing and has better circulation.
Function
-
A cardiac chair is essentially a recliner, re-engineered. The back is higher and slightly reclined. It can be positioned in different configurations for patient comfort. The seat is well cushioned and it has arm rests. In some chairs, one side will swing open to allow for easier patient access. The foot plate raises just like a recliner and the chair is built on casters for patient transport.

A cardiac chair in a hospital bed is just that. The bed has been engineered so it also can be positioned as a chair. The entire head of the bed raises as well as the knee area. The bed frame and mattress take the shape of a chair.
