What Are the Dangers of a Pacemaker?

A pacemaker is a tiny device that is implanted into the chest or abdomen to help regulate the heartbeat for those who suffer from arrhythmia. Arrhythmia is a disorder in which the heart beats too fast, too slow or abnormally. As with any surgery, there are risks associated with it.
  1. Infection

    • Since there is a foreign object in the body, the patient has a greater chance of developing an infection.

    Bleeding

    • Punctured nerves or vessels may cause bleeding around the implantation area.

    Lungs

    • There is a risk that the lungs can collapse while the pacemaker is in place, though the chances are very rare.

    Irritation

    • Irritation may occur around the pacemaker, causing inflammation and bruising.

    Heart Issues

    • In uncommon cases, the heart can be penetrated resulting in bleeding surrounding the heart. The pacemaker also may not operate properly, causing the heart to have abnormal palpitations.
