Medications to Monitor Triglycerides

Triglycerides are a form of fat used for energy. Some people have elevated levels which can lead to problems like coronary artery disease. Certain types of medications can dramatically lower levels.
  1. When Medication is Necessary

    • If your initial reading is over 500 or if lifestyle changes have proved insufficient, your doctor will prescribe one or more medications.

    Fibrates

    • Fibrates increase the rate at which your body removes triglycerides from the blood. They include Lofibra, Tricor and Lopid.

    Niacin

    • Niacin (vitamin B3) reduces triglyceride production by reducing the amount of cholesterol your liver produces. Use prescription forms and do not use over-the-counter supplements. Prescription brands include Niacor and Nicolar.

    Fish Oil

    • The omega-3 content of fish oil lowers triglycerides. You need about 4,000 mg daily. Your doctor will most likely give you a prescription version called Lovaza rather than advising you to take over-the-counter supplements.

    Side Effects

    • These medications share similar side effects. According to the Mayo Clinic, they are well-tolerated for the most part but you might experience muscle or stomach pain, constipation, nausea and diarrhea.

    Monitoring

    • Depending on the medications prescribed, you might need liver monitoring tests.
