How to Take Imdur

Imdur (isosorbide mononitrate) is a prescription drug used to prevent chest pain (angina) in patients with coronary artery disease. It can also be used in conjunction with other drugs to help with symptoms of congestive heart failure. Imdur increases blood flow to the heart by relaxing strained blood vessels. Like all prescription drugs, Imdur should only be taken after being prescribed to you by your personal physician.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult your doctor if you have chest pains associated with coronary artery disease. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Imdur, similar nitroglycerin-based drugs or any other medications. Further alert your doctor of any health conditions you currently have, as well as any recent head injuries, stomach cramping, diarrhea or malabsorption (improper absorption of nutrients). If none of these problems exist, your doctor may prescribe Imdur for your chest pain.

    • 2

Fill the prescription for Imdur at your local pharmacy. Imdur will be prescribed to you in either 30 mg, 60 mg or 120 mg extended release tablets. The usual starting dosage is 30 mg as either a single tablet or half of a 60 mg tablet. The dosage may be increased to 120 mg or in some cases 240 mg.

    • 3

Take Imdur orally upon waking once a day, or as directed by your doctor. Make sure you swallow the tablet with a glass of water, as chewing or crushing the tablet may release all of the medication at once. Because Imdur is designed to prevent chest pain, it should be taken at the start of your day, not upon the first signs of chest pain.

Tell your doctor immediately if you experience fainting, rash, swelling (of the face, tongue or throat), trouble breathing or irregular heartbeat. Headache, light dizziness, nausea and flushing of the body may occur when first taking Imdur. Headaches may persist while taking Imdur and are a sign that the medication is working. Do not stop taking Imdur without first consulting your doctor.
