Prilosec OTC Side Effects

Prilosec OTC is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat bouts of heartburn occurring twice or more a week, and is available in a 20 mg delayed-release tablet. Prilosec OTC stops the acid production in the stomach that leads to heartburn, and is not intended for immediate relief---up to 4 days are required for the drug to take effect. A variety of side effects are associated with Prilosec OTC, ranging from mild to severe.

  1. Central Nervous System

    • Headaches, dizziness and general weakness are common and usually mild side effects concerning the central nervous system.

    Gastrointestinal

    • Patients taking Prilosec OTC may experience diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, anorexia, acid regurgitation and gas. These side effects range from mild to severe.

    Cardiovascular

    • Prilosec OTC can cause chest pain, fast or slow heart rate, irregular heart beats and swelling in the arms and legs. The FDA recommends medical attention if these problems become severe.

    Urinary

    • Urinary tract infections, urination frequency, protein or blood in the urine, testicular pain, glucose in the urine and increased creatinine are possible side effects.

    Miscellaneous

    • Other side effects are back pain, fever, fatigue, cough, respiratory infections, dry skin, rash, weight gain, increased blood sugar and blood clots.
