Do your best to reduce or even completely eliminate your consumption of fatty foods, chocolate, peppermint, coffee and alcoholic beverages.

Try to stay away from foods that can irritate an already damaged esophagus. These foods include tomato products, citrus fruits or juices, and pepper. Additionally, cigarettes and other tobacco products can cause problems for you, making protecting your esophagus one more good reason to quit.

No one is perfect, so if you absolutely must have one of these forbidden items, try to have it 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. Lying down is more likely to cause heartburn.

Also, take antiacids as soon as you have eaten the food. Elevate the head of your bed 6 to 8 inches from the floor to help avoid getting heartburn at bedtime.
