Valves of the Heart

The heart has four valves that control the flow of blood. They are:

* Mitral valve: Located between the left atrium and left ventricle.

* Tricuspid valve: Located between the right atrium and right ventricle.

* Pulmonary valve: Located between the right ventricle and pulmonary artery.

* Aortic valve: Located between the left ventricle and aorta.

Functions of the Heart Valves

The heart valves ensure that blood flows in only one direction, from the atria to the ventricles and then out of the heart to the lungs and body. They prevent backflow of blood, which could damage the heart muscle.

The valves open and close in response to the pressure of blood flow. When the pressure in the atrium is greater than the pressure in the ventricle, the valve opens and blood flows through. When the pressure in the ventricle is greater than the pressure in the atrium, the valve closes and prevents backflow of blood.

Heart Valve Problems

Heart valve problems can occur when the valves are damaged or diseased. This can cause the valves to not open or close properly, which can lead to a variety of symptoms, including:

* Shortness of breath

* Chest pain

* Fatigue

* Lightheadedness

* Dizziness

* Heart palpitations

Heart valve problems can be treated with medication, surgery, or a combination of both.
