What Can Bring on GERD?
GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a chronic digestive disease and is commonly referred to as heartburn. GERD can be brought on by diet, lifestyle or other factors.-
Description
-
GERD occurs when the muscular valve located between the esophagus and the stomach is weakened. The result is stomach acid leaking back into the esophagus and causing irritation to the lining of the esophagus.
Types
-
There are two types of GERD: erosive and non-erosive. It is the erosive type that causes inflammation of the esophagus and can eat away at the lining.
Causes
-
The major cause of GERD is overeating; another cause is smoking cigarettes. Certain foods can cause GERD by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter (LES); these include tomatoes, onions, coffee and foods high in fat.
Medications
-
Medications are also known to bring on GERD as a side effect; these include aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and some antibiotics.
Warning
-
Occasionally, GERD can be caused by a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia is the outpouching of the esophagus above the LES.
