Surgical Options for Acid Reflux
-
Prior Treatments
-
Patients must typically undergo a course of prescription medication to control acid reflux before surgery will be considered.
Indications
-
Doctors may consider surgery if the patient is not able or willing to take prescription medication, if the esophagus has experienced severe damage and if medication is not working.
Preparation
-
Several tests may be performed before surgery including an endoscopy, pH studies, manometry and barium radiological tests.
Surgery
-
Surgery for acid reflux is called fundoplication. It involves wrapping a portion of the stomach around the opening between the stomach and the esophagus.
Outcome
-
This wrap creates pressure that lessens the chance of the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach opening to allow stomach contents to travel out of the stomach.
