Alkaline Diet for GERD
-
How It Works
-
The human body needs to maintain a healthy pH balance for optimum functioning. When the pH is unbalanced for a long period of time, conditions such as heartburn and GERD can occur. The human stomach has difficulty digesting food that is too acidic. The food that goes undigested ends up as acid waste, which causes the symptoms of GERD.
Acidic Foods
-
If you have been diagnosed with GERD, it is important to know which foods will cause acid waste and which foods are safe to eat. Acidic foods that should be avoided include chocolate, citrus fruit and fruit juice, tomato sauces, vinegar-based dressings, alcohol, coffee and spicy food.
Safe Foods
-
Having GERD does not mean that you must stick to a highly restrictive diet. Plenty of foods are safe for frequent heartburn sufferers to enjoy. Whole-grain pasta, bread and rice are healthy options. Also enjoy low-fat dairy products such as cheese, milk and yogurt. Skinless chicken breast, fish, lean steak and eggs are all fine to eat. Fresh fruits and vegetables including apples, bananas, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, green beans, peas and potatoes are good to eat, as well. Wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa, parsley and nuts are highly alkaline and are safe to eat with GERD.
